Rodriguez + Gambino – a Staten Island based specialty consulting and design firm – recognized the importance of creating a high-end, modern, high-class office design, and hired CRAFT by Anika to create an office for the new age. They needed an office that reflected their brand, and CRAFT by Anika was chosen to deliver.

Let’s take a look at the renovations and designs that helped Rodriguez + Gambino brand itself as a the high class consulting firm its clients deserve.

The Reception Area

The reception area is the first place new clients – and employees – see when they enter an office. This makes it, in many ways, the most important room in the entire office.

We needed this room to have the clearest branding, with colors and materials meant to convey all that Rodriguez + Gambino have to offer while also serving the functional needs of a reception area. We did this by:

• Providing input on design and placement of a large acrylic logo at eye level. 
• Recessed storage, so paperwork could be hidden out of sight.
• An oyster quartzite reception desk with dark wood paneling for a bold first impression. 

We wanted to create a reception area that had a modern feel but had elements that would withstand the tests of time, and the combination of wooden design with a countertop that looks like high end marble offers just that for both Rodriguez + Gambino and for those that visit.

Conference Room

Most of the time, functionality is as much the focus as aesthetics. While still true of the conference room, these rooms necessitate what can best be described as “a vibe.” 

They need to have that air of professionalism. They need to have modern appeal. They need to portray a look of class that makes it useful for those that need to have critical meetings with clients and employees. 

Of course, we needed to have functionality as well, starting with a walnut veneer conference table that anchors the room equipped with accessible outlets. There is concealed cabinetry, recessed shelving for a television, and black ergonomic chairs for comfort. 

But we also needed to make sure that this room “spoke” to Rodriguez + Gambino. We have a mounted decorative logo sandwiched between two windows, dark wood-tone cabinet fronts, and let’s not forget the tree to provide a bit of life to the space. 

Executive Office 

When a business owner contacts us for interior design, they’re usually thinking about others – they are thinking about how their employees and customers will feel and interact with the space. 

Still, when an owner makes the choice for a re-design, a part of them is always going to be interested in how they’ll feel in the executive office. This is where they’ll make some of the most important decisions of the business, and the place they’re going to spend the most time. 

It’s also a place that has a natural gravitas to it anyway, and the design needs to reflect that along with individual touches designed for the only person at the workplace that will always be a part of it. 

This room has the most individual character of any room in the office, and we worked with the owner to add and place items that included:

• Live-edge Walnut Desk  

This desk is a custom piece that embodies our client’s love for reclaimed wood and steel while adding rich color to the room. 

It’s a bit hard to see in the photos, but the center epoxy also has a subtle glitter that can be seen in the natural grooves of the walnut wood. It gives it a bit of a river like quality, and instantly captures the attention of anyone entering the room.

It also ties into other elements, like the wooden details of the shelving, so that – despite this being a custom piece – everything can flow together naturally.

• Warm Leather Seating Area  

We wanted two separate types of communal seating near the entrance to fit multiple scenarios. Of particular note is the Vaughn 76″ Leather Sofa, which was available on Joybird but is now available only on the secondary market. 

We then added a dark metal coffee table and then placed two armchairs, the Mid-Century Leather Show Wood Chairs available at West Elm, on the opposite end to create numerous meeting scenarios or to simply relax and look out on the workplace. 

We also gave the executive office plenty of shelving for personal decorations, family photos, and even the occasional libation. By adding multiple TV mounts, this office not only serves the personal needs of the boss, but is also a room that can be utilized in many different ways.

Employee Workspace

Of course, while all these individual rooms are beautiful, a functional employee workspace is where much of the magic will happen. No one wants cubicles anymore. They want to be able to feel like they have their own space, while also offering plenty of opportunities to collaborate. 

We’ll talk about the individual decorative items in a moment, but first, look at the desk placement. You’ll notice that while the employees may appear close together, they actually have plenty of privacy, as they’re all facing different directions with natural barriers. If they want to talk to their coworker, they need only look over, but in the meantime they can feel like they’re working without distraction and without eyes on them.

As far as the choice in design is concerned, we utilized black ergonomic chairs to match the deep black desk spaces. There are TVs on either side of the room, plenty of floating shelving and storage, bulletin boards, art, and more. 

There was also space for a small kitchenette. We added a backsplash of Gems Grigio fluted tile, added numerous small appliances including both a microwave and toaster oven, and provided everything this shared space could need for meals, snacks, and drinks.

At CRAFT by Anika, we’ve seen firsthand how quickly things can go wrong when safety or planning is overlooked. A few recent incidents reminded us just how important it is to approach renovations with care. They also inspired this post, because homeowners deserve to be informed!

Safety First

A homeowner contacted us for a renovation. When we arrived for the consultation, there was visible mold on the walls in the bathroom and the wall just outside of the bathroom. Their contractor told them not to worry; that it would be taken care of when construction began in two months.

This is unacceptable

Active mold growth spreads quickly and poses serious health risks. It can cause respiratory issues and worsen allergies. It may also compromise the health of anyone in the home.

Before any renovation work begins, safety must come first.

Step one is finding the source. Mold is a symptom, not the root cause. That’s why we first have to identify the source of moisture fueling the mold. This could be a plumbing leak, poor ventilation, condensation buildup, or a roofing issue. Depending on the location and circumstances, identifying and correcting the problem may require a licensed plumber, roofer, HVAC technician, or waterproofing specialist.

Once the source is located, professional mold testing is essential. This confirms the presence of mold, and also helps determine the type and severity. Different types of mold require different remediation protocols, and testing helps guide the cleanup process appropriately. It also establishes baseline data that can be used to verify the effectiveness of remediation later.

Step two is professional remediation. After moisture problems have been resolved and testing is complete, licensed mold remediation experts should perform the cleanup. This often uses proper containment, removal, and disposal procedures. The process must end with clearance testing to confirm the mold has been safely and fully removed.

How we handled it:

We immediately called in trusted local professionals:

• Dunrite Home Inspections (Staten Island, NY) conducted certified mold testing.
• Puro Clean of Bulls Head (Staten Island, NY) performed remediation.

Because we addressed the issue immediately and followed proper procedures, the home was safe, clean, and ready for renovation. Health and safety always come before aesthetics.

Planning Before Demolition (The Unplanned Gut Job)

In another recent project, a homeowner hired us after their contractor demolished their kitchen, dining room, and powder room. The problem, however, was that they were demolished without a plan in place. There were no drawings, no measurements, no material selections. No plan.

The result? A stripped-down space with no roadmap. Just a mess (and quite some stress!).

In spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, every inch counts. These areas require:

• Final floor plans
• Cabinetry design
• Material selections
• Lighting layouts
• Plumbing and electrical planning

Contractors need construction drawings. These documents ensure accurate dimensions and help with code compliance.

In some cases, an architect is required. Especially when:

• Altering the structure in a big way

Designers are just as critical. We handle space planning, flow, finish selections, and visual cohesion. The details that turn a basic renovation into a tailored space.

Permits are another step that can’t be skipped. Most plumbing, electrical, and structural work requires filing with your local building department. Skipping this step can result in problems at resale.

Clarity With Requirements

Another example of a “renovation don’t” comes from a client who, unfortunately, didn’t specify that the floor should be leveled during construction.

While it might seem like a given that walls and floors should be straight and even, contractors follow the scope of work as written. What isn’t stated can easily be missed. 

In this case, the uneven floor wasn’t corrected before the kitchen installation, which led to serious problems: the cabinets couldn’t be installed flush, and the kitchen island wobbled due to the slope. 

It was a costly mistake that could have been avoided with a simple line in the instructions. This story is a reminder that even the “obvious” should be clearly outlined during the planning phase.

Don’t DIY Your Renovation Team; Here’s Why…

You might be thinking of becoming your own general contractor. We understand, saving a few bucks can be tempting. BUT, without renovation experience, this can actually be a problem. This often leads to:

Do

• Address safety hazards immediately. Mold, asbestos, structural cracks, or faulty wiring should never be ignored.
• Find and fix the source of moisture before mold remediation. Leaks must be addressed first.
• Have a complete plan before demolition. Know your layout, finishes, and functionality.
• Provide your contractor with construction drawings. These are their roadmaps to make sure everything is done accurately.
• File permits for structural, electrical, or plumbing work. They protect you legally and ensure proper inspections.
• Hire the right professionals. Architects for structure; designers for layout and finishes; and licensed trades for technical work.

• Skip permits to save time or money. Unpermitted work can come back to haunt you.
• Manage the project yourself (unless you have professional experience). It’s more complex than it looks.
• Expect one professional to do it all. Each expert serves a different (and necessary!) role.
• Rush the prep phase. Proper planning leads to better results and fewer surprises.

With our interior design services, that small, underused space became a stylish powder room filled with thoughtful details. From refined moulding to space-saving fixtures, this petite footprint now makes a big impact.

The Before: A Closet with Potential

The original space was a typical coat closet: narrow, windowless, and barely wide enough to walk into. But what it lacked in square footage, it made up for in location. Right off the front entryway, it was the ideal spot to convert into a powder room for guests.

The homeowner wanted something:

• Space-saving
• Bright and calming
• Consistent with the entryway flooring
• Stylish yet low-maintenance

We knew the layout had to be precise. We had limited inches of length and width to work with, but the result had to look (and feel) intentional, not cramped.

A New Build with Purpose

In this project, we reimagined underutilized space. The former coat closet off the entryway served a purpose, but transforming it into a powder room gave the home even more value. By reframing the interior and carefully laying out every element, we created a fully functional guest bathroom that feels elegant, clean, and cohesive with the rest of the home.

The transformation started with two essentials: a clear layout and a calming palette.

The Layout

This was a new build-out, which meant creating everything from plumbing and electrical to walls, ventilation, finishes, etc. We began by mapping out the layout to ensure that all essential elements could fit without crowding the room:

• A narrow vanity that allowed storage for bathroom essentials (cleaning products, toiletries, etc.)
• A compact toilet
• Sufficient clearance for comfort
• Wall-mounted lighting (this helped us avoid shadows)
• Ventilation that wouldn’t compromise the ceiling height

By coordinating trades from the start, we were able to deliver a high-quality finish that feels original to the home.

The Upgrades

Now, let’s have a look at what we incorporated to achieve the final results.

Flooring and Tile

Porcelanosa Tiles

The flooring in both the entryway and the new powder room features Porcelanosa tile. We always vouch for this brand because of its modern finish, durability, and stain resistance. By continuing the same tile into the bathroom, we visually extended the space and made the powder room feel like a natural extension of the home. This is one way we made sure it felt like an original part of the home (rather than an afterthought).

The warm neutral tone of the tile keeps things grounded while allowing other features, like the white wainscoting and chrome fixtures, to shine. More on the palette below!

Wall Treatments

The color palette of the powder room was clean and coastal-inspired.

Sherwin-Williams Silver Tipped Sage

Above the wainscoting, we used Sherwin-Williams Silver Tipped Sage. This is a soft and muted green with hints of gray. It’s calming, elegant, and spa-like, exactly the atmosphere we wanted for a guest bath. It plays beautifully with natural light and adds a gentle wash of color that contrasts subtly with the white paneling.

Sherwin-Williams Dover White

In the entryway, we used Sherwin-Williams Dover White, one of our favorite warm whites. It feels soft without being yellow and gives the room a crisp and clean ambiance. One that reflects light and enhances the room’s height.

Trim and Moulding

To give the space architectural polish, we installed crown moulding and base trim throughout the bathroom. The classic detailing elevates the narrow space and reinforces the home’s traditional charm. Simultaneously, it gives a custom-built finish that makes this powder room feel anything but builder-basic.

The paneling runs about halfway up the wall, adding a sense of scale and proportion. It also helps protect the walls from everyday wear.

Compact Fixtures

The fixtures we chose were compact (a need of the space) but still so stylish!

Kohler Fixtures from Brooklyn

Every plumbing fixture and accessory in this space was selected for functionality and quality. All were sourced from the Kohler Signature Store in Brooklyn, our go-to for bath fittings.

• The toilet features a sleek and modern silhouette that tucks perfectly into the corner without taking up unnecessary space.
• The compact rectangular sink is wall-adjacent. It allows more room to move while offering practical function for hand washing.
• The single-lever faucet, toilet paper holder, and wall sconce are all polished chrome. They tie the whole palette together and reflect the light beautifully.

Mirror and Styling Details

We chose an oval mirror to contrast the vertical lines of the paneling while softening the clean angles of the sink and walls. The mirror’s shape helps elongate the space, guiding the eye upward and visually “opening up” the narrow footprint.

Above the toilet, we installed a minimal floating shelf, perfect for a small plant or candle. For those looking to add warmth and character to small spaces, J Thomas Home offers custom, made-to-order shelves in real wood and a variety of finishes. Though subtle, this shelf adds personality without clutter.

Why Powder Rooms Matter (Especially in Staten Island Homes)

In neighborhoods like Port Richmond, where many homes, despite their generous floor plans, were built with just one main bathroom, a powder room is a true lifestyle upgrade. Especially so for this home, where there was only one bathroom located upstairs. The powder room on the first floor adds comfort for guests, everyday convenience for the homeowner, and long-term value to the property.

The Kohler Signature Store had its first full day of operation just over a year ago, on January 15th, 2024. For most Brooklynites it was just another cold January day, but for both designers and humble DIY-ers alike, it was a day that made kitchen and bath renovation even more accessible. It brought Kohler out of Manhattan’s bustling Flatiron District and into Brooklyn’s Sunset Park. With the help of our partner and Kohler Signature Store representative, Jordan, we’re going to answer some of your burning questions about this new community staple and what they can provide for you and your future projects.

Easy Access, Quality Accessibility

Traveling anywhere in New York City can be a bit of a drag, but the Kohler Signature Store has picked the prime location of Industry City to help your trip go as smoothly as possible.

If you choose to drive, there’s either metered parking on 3rd avenue, free ticketed parking on 2nd avenue, or you can park in a lot at the back of the mall for an all-day fee of $15. This means that after your business with Kohler, you can check out the many restaurants, art exhibits, and stores the community has to offer.

To reiterate, the products found at the Signature Store come directly from Kohler, carry Kohler’s warranties, and are guaranteed to be the highest quality Kohler can provide. You will not be able to find these products as they are at any other non-signature location.

Businesses Want Business

Don’t be fooled by the word “signature,” Kohler stores are still franchised and competition does exist. Not only will some stores price match to get your business, but locations also compete with sales. Sales for all Kohler customers begin at 25% but may vary depending on again, competitors, or the quantity of items you’re purchasing. Bulk orders itch to get you a discount. 

In addition to this, Kohler offers a trade discount of 32%, meaning if you’re a business owner you will not spend retail price on items you’re looking at. Repeat business is also rewarded, designers who frequent Kohler potentially qualifying for deeper discounts.

Why The Big Apple Should Choose Kohler

There are many reasons why Kohler should be a customer’s first choice, but we’ll narrow it down to just three: stage functionality, product diversity and collaborations, and quality.

First, stage functionality. When you walk into your typical department store, the only thing you get to actively see in action are light fixtures and their bulbs. When you go to the Industry City Kohler Signature Store, you’re able to interact with dozens of hand showers, shower heads, and sinks. As we like to say, visiting this signature store is like being able to try out all the lotions and soaps in a Bath and Bodyworks.
