Creating Timeless Home Design: A Stunning Kitchen and Bath Remodel in Westerleigh, Staten Island, NY

Making a design project timeless? It’s harder than you’d think! Especially considering there are challenges almost every step of the way. The space should be beautiful and enduring—all while being practical.

In our latest project—the renovation of a Center Hall Colonial in Westerleigh, Staten Island, NY—we combined classic charm with modern sensibilities. During the project, we collected insider tips that you wouldn’t find elsewhere. The kind you would need to have a grip on for a successful project.

At CRAFT By Anika, we specialize in creating spaces that are as functional as are aesthetically pleasing. This helps make sure every design choice—big or small—complements the home’s character. And in this blog post, we’ll take you through the journey of our Center Hall Colonial design project: a beautiful kitchen, main bath, and powder room remodel.

Understanding Timeless Design…

Timeless design means creating a space that feels beautiful and relevant today as well as in the years to come. The style of the interior isn’t influenced by fleeting trends. We’d like to say, a timeless design is one that ages like fine wine.

Timeless design begins with the right choices. Materials, colors, finishes… all of these things have a big say in creating a style that lasts. For example, natural wood and stone are two materials that introduce durability. And durability is one thing which will be celebrated for years on end!

In terms of colors, choosing a somewhat neutral palette—and accenting it with bolder colors—can provide personality without overwhelming the space. And finishes like matte metals can add texture without feeling overwhelming or “too trendy”.

Project Challenges

During our Westerleigh design project, the goal was clear—but there were challenges along the way:

Space Constraints

Space was a big constraint in this design project. The kitchen in particular was quite small. It lacked storage as well as workspace. In the bathroom and powder room, the flow of space didn’t fully support modern usage. This meant we had to work closely with the client to reimagine the layouts.

Selecting Materials

We had to choose materials that complemented the home’s aesthetic, plus provided longevity. The challenge lay in finding materials that were both classic and durable—natural stones, durable wood finishes, high-quality metals, etc.—that would not quickly go out of style or show wear and tear.

Blending Modern Design with Classic Architecture

This interior design project required a really balanced approach. We wanted to add modern design elements without compromising the space’s colonial (read: traditional) architecture. From the signature moulding to the classic paneling, we wanted to keep the architectural integrity intact. All while obliging to the client’s demand for modern design, of course.

Design Solutions

Such project challenges needed strategic thinking. Together, the team came together to brainstorm the best possible—and creative—solutions!

Planning the Layout

We began with optimizing space and flow in the kitchen and bathrooms. Together with the client, we reimagined the layouts. In the kitchen, we introduced custom-built floating shelves from J Thomas Home. These maximized storage while maintaining that open and airy feel within the kitchen interior.

We also replaced the faucet with a Simplice touchless pull-down piece from Kohler—this features a motion sensor under the spout that gives touchless on/off functionality (even with a simple wave of your hand). Its tech is advanced and reduces false activations, so your cooking and/or cleaning is made super simple.

In the powder room, we chose elements that were compact but impactful. Like a sleek Kohler x Studio McGee faucet and Jeffrey Alexander hardware—supplied by Details Moulding Supply—to make the most of the small space.

The main bathroom’s layout included a shower bench kit provided by The Original Granite Bracket. While the bench itself was not customized by them, we personalized it by wrapping it in luxurious quartzite stone. This not only added a refined touch but also created a floating effect that enhanced the feeling of space in the bathroom. Picking the Materials

We chose Porcelanosa tiles for the kitchen floor—which were durable and elegant. Then, we paired this with quartz countertops with subtle veining. Soft oyster cabinetry tied the space together, which was complemented by a light shade of Sherwin Williams paint for the walls. Also, a big shout out to the built-in appliances by GE Cafe Series. These seamlessly integrated into the space (and gave all the functionality a homeowner needs in their kitchen).

In the bathroom and powder room, Porcelanosa tiles added quite some texture. The floating vanity, sink, and storage cabinet—again by Porcelanosa—were carefully chosen for their clean lines and modern appeal. Kohler fixtures (including a shower system and faucet) provided functionality as well as style.

How We Blended Classic and Contemporary

One of THE biggest challenges was balancing the home’s colonial heritage with the client’s wish for a blend of traditional and modern design. We knew we couldn’t sacrifice on either end, so had to adopt a clever approach. We respected the home’s traditional elements—like moulding and wood finishes—and added modern touches.

In the kitchen, we allowed glass pendant lighting over the dining table to become a modern focal point. The refinished dining table honored the family’s history and memories. For a little background…Our clients had a table rich with memories and sentimental value, and instead of replacing it, we gave it new life. Our talented contractor refinished and elevated the piece to seamlessly fit within the design.

Simultaneously, the powder room’s Brewster Home Fashions wallpaper (supplied by Sherwin Williams) added a touch of classic charm, and the main bathroom’s floating elements brought modern minimalism to the forefront.

We also played with textures and finishes. Textural Hunter Douglas Roman shades—supplied by R&R Blinds—framed the windows in the kitchen and powder room. These efficiently allow homeowners to control light levels. They also add a light window treatment to the room(s).

The Design Process

The design process, from start to end, was an absolute pleasure! We had so much fun completing it, especially the following two steps—which are adopted in many of the projects offered as a part of interior design and decorating services:

Mood Boards

We first created a mood board, which guided every detail. This set the tone for a cohesive design across all 3 spaces. The mood board showcased our vision for a classic yet modern space.

Collaborations

Executing this project did come with its hurdles—but we gotta give credit where credit is due. Our collabs with trusted vendors and contractors made sure each challenge ended up with a solution 😊

And, Done!

The finished spaces were just as we imagined: incredibly timeless! When we were done, our client was so pleased with the results. They smiled wide—knowing their space was done for years to come 😉
